Universal Tales Of The African Fabrics: The Mudcloth (Bogolanfini)

The mud cloth is a beautiful African fabric with a beautiful journey to its being. Bogolanfini the name is coined from ‘bogolan’ meaning cloth and ‘fini’ meaning mud. Cotton based fabric with deep cultural meaning that has won the hearts of many in the modern day.

The patterns on the mudcloth are bold distinct and we can describe them as earthy colours. The colour is achieved by using fermented mud and plant dyes. This application will take about 4 to 8 days to set on the fabric depending on the ecological conditions.

The patterns are drawn by skillful artists and are symbols. Each piece of mudcloth produced has a story to tell. The symbols used and the manner in which they are arranged goes to reveal secrets!
